SpiceJet is a low-cost airline based in New Delhi, India. It began service in May 2005. Earlier known as Royal Airways, it is a reincarnation of ModiLuft. SpiceJet marked its entry in service with Rs. 99 fares for the first 99 days. There were 9000 seats available at this rate. It followed it up with a Rs. 999 promotional scheme on select routes.

The origins of SpiceJet track back to February 1993 when ModiLuft, one of India’s first post-deregulation airlines that was launched by the Indian industrialist S K Modi, in technical partnership with the German flag carrier Lufthansa. The airline project was started in February, 1993 and on 5 May 1993 took the first flight from New Delhi to Mumbai.

Modiluft Ltd has informed Bombay Stock Exchange that the Mr. Atul Sharma, Mr. Kishore Gupta, Mr. Siddhartha Sharma, Mr. Mansukhlal Kotecha and Mr. Vijay Kumar have been elected as Directors of the Company with effect from December 31, 2001. The aforesaid persons were earlier co-opted as Additional Directors.

In 2004, management of the airline was taken over by Sanjay Malhotra and Ajay Singh, who renamed the company, raised funds and restarted operations. Thus, was born SpiceJet following the low-cost model. On 7 March 2005, the Airports Authority of India approved three overnight parking slots (for aircraft) to SpiceJet, with two in Delhi and one in Mumbai.

It was very successful and by 2008, it was India’s second-largest low-cost airline in terms of market share. SpiceJet accepted an offer in principle from a U.S.-based private equity firm that would make more funds available. Indian media baron Kalanidhi Maran acquired 37.7% in the business in June 2010.

Jet Airways is one of India’s premier private airlines. It was incorporated as an air taxi operator on April 1, 1992. Jet Airways commenced its commercial airline operations on May 5, 1993 with a fleet of four leased Boeing 737 aircraft. It was granted scheduled airline status on January 14, 1995. Jet Airways became a deemed public company on July 1, 1996. On January 19, 2001, Jet Airways was reconverted into a private company. Jet Airways became a public company on December 28, 2004.

Jet Airways currently provides regular scheduled services to 42 destinations in India and two destinations outside India, operating 1,924 flights weekly. Its aircraft fleet has grown from four aircraft in 1993 to currently 42 aircraft comprising 34 Boeing 737 aircraft and eight ATR 72-500 aircraft.

In January 2006, Jet Airways announced its decision to buy Air Sahara, the only other major private airline, making it the biggest takeover in Indian aviation history. The resulting airline would have been the country’s largest, but the deal fell through in June 2006. However, a modified deal went through in April 2007 and Air Sahara became JetLite. In August 2008, the airline announced its plans to fully integrate JetLite into Jet Airways.

In October 2008 Jet Airways and rival Kingfisher Airlines announced an alliance which primarily includes an agreement on code-sharing on both domestic and international flights, joint fuel management to reduce expenses, common ground handling, joint utilization of crew and sharing of similar frequent flier programmes.

In July 2012, Jet Airways officially sought government approval to join Star Alliance.

According to Indian Airlines baggage policy, luggage of different weights are permissible for different classes – Economy (20 kgs), Executive Class (30 kgs) and First Class (40 kgs). Linear luggage dimensions for checked shouldn’t exceed more than 158 cms. Indian airlines cabin baggage policy restricts the cabin baggage size to 115 cms and its weight to 8 kgs. Also, it must be noted that infants travelling on an Indian airlines flight are allowed 10 kgs of baggage.
